History

praySince established in 1995, Harbor Habitat for Humanity has helped nearly 100 families to become new homeowners while revitalizing communities. Harbor Habitat for Humanity is a 501©3 non-profit housing ministry dedicated to building decent, affordable housing in partnership with those in need, in the city of Benton Harbor and Benton Charter Township. In 2001, with the help of all of our volunteers, Harbor Habitat built offices and a warehouse on E. Main St. in Benton Harbor.  Soon after moving into our new home we hired our first full time staff member. We now operate with a full time staff of 14 and a Board of Directors.

Harbor Habitat is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International yet we seek our own support. Our volunteers, donors, individuals, churches, corporations and other organizations, such as schools or civic groups share our vision to eliminating substandard housing. Each Habitat house is built with community partners that may donate funding, building materials and labor to reach our shared goal.

About Benton Harbor

Benton Harbor/Benton Township is the largest community in Berrien County and has a disproportionate number of rental properties vs. owner-occupied homes. Aging community stock and lack of new single-family residential construction has created a severe housing need in the community.

This community also has a strong network of community-minded churches and families willing to partner with other volunteers to revitalize their neighborhoods through building homes…and futures.

Support has already been received from individuals, churches, organizations and corporations – but for Harbor Habitat to meet its goals, we need YOU as a partner. Check out ways you can contribute and get involved with Harbor Habitat for Humanity...
