Volunteer Opportunity: Community Garden

The new Community Garden has been planted!! Location is just south of the ReStore near Nickerson Avenue in Benton Township.  Volunteers will be needed to supervise daily activities, prepare the land, plant, water, weed, etc. throughout the season.  Many hands make light work, so if you can spare even an hour, give us a call!!

Habitat for Humanity is a volunteer-driven organization. Volunteers work on construction, administration, fundraising, and just about everything in between! Without volunteers, Harbor Habitat would not have been able to build 100 homes in Benton Harbor and Benton Charter Township, MI over the past 15 years. Without volunteers, Harbor Habitat would not have been able to provide 100 families with quality affordable housing. Without volunteers, Harbor Habitat would not be able to exist.

Our success is directly tied to our ability to offer an exceptional volunteer experience. There are countless opportunities to serve in this ministry. Our staff works with several committees as well as individuals, groups, and homeowners who are earning sweat equity hours to keep this organization alive and growing. Volunteers come from different backgrounds, skill levels, and talents. We recognize that all volunteers are very special, and therefore:

  • Everyone needs to do meaningful work.
  • Everyone wants to feel needed.
  • Everyone has something to offer.

Our goal is to match the right volunteer with the right task. Some volunteer opportunities include:

  • Become a construction crew leader; share your knowledge and help teach and supervise volunteers in construction projects throughout the build season.
  • Join a weekday build crew or specialty team and dedicate one day per week during our build season.
  • Help on specific projects (such as siding or roofing) depending your skills and interests.
  • Join a Habitat committee: family selection/support, construction, public relations, special events, volunteer services, finance, or fund development.

Adults of all ages are encouraged to use their existing skills or learn new ones according to their interests and abilities. Youth volunteers between 16-17 years of age may participate on build sites, provided they are supervised by a responsible adult and work at ground level with age-appropriate tools (not power tools). Landscaping, painting, and clean-up are ideal tasks for young volunteers.
