TITLE:   DIRECTOR OF FAMILY SERVICES

 

Reports to: Executive Director

 

 

 

SERVICE SUMMARY:

 

Coordinates and facilitates all aspects of the family services program to ensure that properly selected families are successful and remain active partners with Harbor Habitat. Monitors the efforts of all volunteers associated with the Family Services department. Working with minimal supervision while exercising independent judgment, the director will assure that the goals of Harbor Habitat are achieved, and that our mission and purpose is communicated broadly and effectively to the Benton Harbor Community and beyond.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  1. Understands, agrees, and is able to communicate effectively the philosophy and ministry mission (partnership: empowering vs. enabling) to individuals and families that are interested in developing a partnership with Harbor Habitat.

 

  1. Support and embrace Habitat’s Christian mission and philosophy.

 

  1. Works closely with the Executive Director and supervises all department staff and volunteers. Coordinates the efforts of all volunteers performing family services tasks.

 

  1. Facilitates recruitment, application, and qualifying of potential partner families. Develops an annual plan for targeting sources of families to be selected for partnership including recruiting materials such as advertisements, bulletin inserts, posters, etc.

 

  1. With assistance from the Family Selection Committee, recommends future partners for approval to the Board of Directors.

 

  1. Supervises and facilitates homeownership and financial management training.

 

  1. Working with the Construction and Volunteer staff, tracks and validates all partner family sweat equity hours. Coordinates family participation in scheduled volunteer work days.

 

  1. Provides opportunities and guidance which enable and encourage families to continue their involvement with HHFH after occupancy.

 

  1. Assigns and monitors family advocates/mentors.

 

  1. Plans and implements ground breaking and home dedication ceremonies .

 

  1. Assures that Harbor Habitat adheres to all applicable local, state, and federal laws as they relate to equal housing opportunities to the residents of Benton Harbor and our service areas.

 

  1. Assists the Executive Director in preparing grant applications as well as mortgage and closing documents. Provides documentation as requested in support of grant reporting requirements. Assists in preparing family for closing.

 

  1. Monitors mortgage payments and reports late or missed payments to Executive Director and the Finance Director. Maintains contact with partner families to assure that our partnership is not jeopardized by changes in the family’s health, financial, employment and/or income situation.

 

  1. Maintains computerized records of all applicants, qualified/approved, and partner families.

 

  1. Ensures the security of sensitive and/or confidential family and applicant information.

 

  1. Performs all family selection and services tasks not otherwise assigned to subordinate staff members.

 

  1. Respond promptly and properly to application inquiries.
  2. In conjunction with Family Services Coordinator arrange and schedule Partner Family sweat equity participation in volunteer workdays.
  3. Maintain required portions of the Harbor Habitat website.
  4. Submit all necessary reports to ED when requested including: Monthly Board Report, Weekly time & statistic report, etc. Provide an annual department budget and year-end report.
  5. Available for emergency or crisis situations.

 

 

 

PERFORMANCE WILL BE CONSIDERED SATISFACTORY WHEN:

 

·        Sufficient numbers of families are available for home selection.

·        Progress can be demonstrated in the improvement of our selection process.

·        Planning and selection activities are well ahead of our construction schedule.

·        Families are adequately and properly prepared and trained for the transition to homeownership.

·        Families are sufficiently informed, aware, and compliant with Harbor Habitat expectations.

·        Partnerships within the community are maintained. Help to increase community participation in all aspects of our mission.

·        Assignments are completed in a timely and effective manner.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. Demonstrate and show respect to all applicants and Habitat partner families.

 

  1. College undergraduate degree preferred.

 

  1. Valid, current, and unrestricted Michigan Driver License.

 

  1. Excellent proven oral and written communication skills.

 

  1. Ability to work under pressure and coordinate various activities and groups of people to achieve maximum efficiency.

 

  1. Proven ability to teach, train, and mentor. Patient. Willing to delegate tasks to volunteers. Must be able to meet deadlines. Experience with project scheduling, budgeting, and recordkeeping.

 

  1. Ability and willingness to listen and accept feedback. Must be willing to learn.

 

 

  1. Ability and willingness to work with Churches and other community groups.

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Able to hear, speak, read, and comprehend English at conversational/business level. May be required to travel.  Able to operate computer, telephone and other office machines.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 

Primarily works in climate controlled office and on construction sites from time to time in all weather conditions. May need to visit or represent organization at community locations. Must be aware and sensitive to the issues relating to living and working in a culturally diverse community. Must be available for Saturday build days and evening meetings when scheduled.

HOURS AND COMMITMENT:
