A Hand Up!

Dear Prospective Family,

Habitat for Humanity works to empower families by giving them a hand up, not a hand out, towards building and owning their own home. Homes are sold at no-profit and families are given interest-free loans. House mortgage payments are “recycled” into a Fund for Humanity and are used to build more homes.

Harbor Habitat has worked with families and community volunteers to build 56 houses over the past 10 years for Benton Harbor families living in substandard housing, and every year the number of families joining in partnership with Harbor Habitat increases.

Criteria for Family Selection includes: need for adequate housing, willingness to participate as a partner with Harbor Habitat, and ability to pay for a Habitat home. The Family Selection Process cycles several times each year, fill out an Application or attend an Orientation (see Calendar) to learn more about becoming a Partner Family.

Each partner family completes a homebuyer orientation and contributes 300 hours of labor (Sweat Equity) toward their house and other Habitat houses.

Harbor Habitat for Humanity supports Equal Opportunity Housing and does not discriminate because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, family status, marital status, age, national origin or source of income.
