Women Build!
Habitat for Humanity International's Women Build department promotes the involvement of women in the construction of Habitat houses. Women-built projects provide an opportunity for women to learn construction in a supportive environment. Women Build works through affiliates to nurture, recruit and train women to build and maintain simple, decent, healthy and affordable homes.
More than 650 Habitat houses have been
built in the United States by women crews. This number continues
to grow, especially through the success of the Women Building
A Legacy initiative, which invites women to address the
problem of substandard housing and its effects on the health
and well-being of children.
The Harbor Habitat for Humanity Women Build offers construction classes in partnership with Lowe's, located at 1300 Mall Drive in Benton Harbor. Classes are scheduled for Satrudays and will include all the necessary tools for building a house. Classroom topic include: painting, framing, roofing, siding, insulation and finishing techniques. Classes last six weeks and everyone is welcome...there is no charge or need to sign up! Any questions, please contact Brianne Bloom at 269-926-1210 or Harbor Habitat for Humanity at 269-925-9635. Lowes Construction Classes:
Lowe's involvement with Women Build is much more than a financial arrangement--it is a reflection of our commitment to address the nationwide issue of substandard housing,” said Larry Stone, chairman of the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation. “We are helping to build homes everyone can take pride in--our employees, the volunteers, the partner families and the communities.
Lowe's is the international
sponsor for Women Build and locally is offering Construction
Education Classes at the Benton Harbor Lowe's.
Topics covered in the classes include:
Using Hand and Power Tools
Framing
Walls and Roofs
Exterior Siding, Roofing and Shingles
Insulation and
Drywall
Interior Painting and Trim
The skills learned by members
of the Women Build Committee will improve the volunteer talent pool.
These are transferable skills that not only will assist in building
Habitat homes, but will be useful to women in their personal lives
as well. Contact Susan Thompson, Women Build Chair, to get involved.
